  • Time intensive and dedication required

In P90x there are 12 DVD’s, more like 11 because the Ab Ripper X DVD is useless and should be given to a friend.  I say that because Ab Ripper is already included on all of the days where you are supposed to use it (i.e. you’re supposed to do Ab Ripper X on the same day you do Chest & Back and it follows the workout).  The 12 DVD’s are:

  • Chest + Back (And Ab Ripper X)
  • Plyometrics
  • Shoulders + Arms (And Ab Ripper X)
  • Yoga X
  • Legs + Back (And Ab Ripper X)
  • Kenpo X
  • Core Synergistics
  • Chest, Shoulders + Triceps (And Ab Ripper X)
  • Back + Biceps (And Ab Ripper X)
  • Cardio X
  • Ab Ripper X
  • X Stretch

The workouts range from about 1:00 for plyometrics up to 1:30 for Yoga X.  Some of the lifting ones are only about 50 minutes, but then you have the 15 minute Ab Ripper X video after that so it ends up being more than an hour.  Because of the length of the workouts and the complexity of the muscle confusion, if you follow the nutrition guide and keep pushing play, you can expect to lose weight and gain muscle mass.

My first cycle of P90x I went from 18% body fat at 225 lbs to 11% body fat at 205 lbs and I was not as disciplined on the nutrition program as I should have been.  The good thing about P90X is that it scales to your fitness level.  Playing college sports, I already had a fairly good base so doing push ups and pull ups was not a problem.  But for someone who has never done them, they offer variations for every move like doing push ups from your knees or assisted pull ups.

Who should purchase P90X?

Anyone who is fairly fit and does not have issues doing at minimum a few push ups, jumping, and doing pull ups.  For people who are just starting their fitness journey’s I would recommend something more basic, like power 90 to build up some strength and shred gristle.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time doing P90X although I have recently moved on to P90X2.  P90X was very convenient, easy to push play, and the results are astounding when the program is followed.

Unlike Beachbody’s Insanity program (see Amazon store), one of the con’s to P90X is that purchasing additional equipment is recommended.  Expect to spend a few extra bucks acquiring the equipment to do P90X and I highly recommend ordering Beachbody’s P90x gear from Amazon over directly ordering from Beachbody as it is significantly cheaper on Amazon.

When I ordered P90X from Beachbody back in 2010, I purchased a pull up bar, bands, Bowflex dumbells, push up stands, a yoga mat, foam roller, and a medicine ball.  The only purchase I felt was unnecessary were the bands, as the dumbbells replaced them and I would much rather lift with dumbbells than the bands.

Another issue that I had with Beachbody, the company that sells P90X, is that they give you all sorts of “free” samples when you purchase P90X.   Little do you know, they set you up on automatic billing hoping that people will not realize they are paying monthly for the vitamins and recovery drink.

I did not get caught paying the first monthly fee, but I do know people have ended up ordering another month supply of vitamins and P90X recovery formula, realizing it when it shows up on their doorstep.  All that being said, I still highly recommend P90X and the P90X equipment, Activit vitamins, and P90x recovery formula.
